Erin Wehrmann

I first meet Erin last year when she was teaching spin classes at Workshop Fitness. When I decided a few months ago to hire a personal trainer as birthday present for myself, she was the first person I thought about. I was first introduced to Erin through my best friend, who is also one of her clients. After our first meeting, I told my friend, “She moves like the Terminator, dude. I think you better do whatever she tells you.” She ignored me, and instead invited me to drop in on one of her sessions with Erin. I did, and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. A few months later, bored with my exercise routine and recovering from a mild injury, I contacted Erin to see if she would be willing to take me on as a low-frequency client. We met and put together a plan. I’ve been exercising with Erin’s custom work-outs since May, and I’ve really enjoyed the experience. My goals at our first meeting were to rebuild my conditioning enough to run and enjoy a 5K, something I haven’t done consistently in several years, build the brute strength needed to rock climb with my husband and son, and lose enough weight to comfortably fit into all my pants. Erin tailored work-outs around these goals, and has continued to update and refine them at each meeting. Three months later, I can see a noticeable difference in my overall strength, particularly my upper body and core. I can make it up more than one climb on Seismic Wall in the greenbelt. I’ve lost a couple of inches around my waist, and, while I’ve had to back off of running as frequently as I’d like in order to address some knee problems, when I do run or use the elliptical I find that Erin’s weight training program has done more for my endurance than the distance training I’ve done in the past. My overall energy level seems higher, and I’m really pleased. I would particularly recommend Erin for those who are body-conscious or otherwise intimidated by exercise. Although she looks like she could rip you in half, Erin is entirely low pressure and non-judgmental about what you can, can’t, or “should” be able to do. If an exercise isn’t working for you, she knows six different ways to modify it and five alternate moves. She’s great at reading your cues and finding ways to work around injuries or other limitations. I plan to continue with Erin as long as it suits us both, and I’m looking forward to it.

Paul Hedrick

Working with Paul over the past year far exceeded my expectations. Initially, I met Paul after a long period of inactivity due to a knee surgery that left me insecure about working out. I was injured doing a two-mile run on a cinder track; this was supposed to be a warm up for sprint intervals, which I had been performing for a year without event. By the time I signed up for training at WS, I was out of shape, 20 pounds heavier than I had ever been; beyond this, at 43, I didn’t expect to gain any new vigor over the next few months of convalescing from my injury. My expectations, indeed, were low.

Paul’s approach to the training alleviated my insecurity about getting in shape. For one thing, I came to realize that training is a process that takes place over a trajectory of phases: First, I gained strength and endurance. I realized I could workout with more intensity over time, which was not the case when we first started. Secondly, I started losing body fat and gaining muscle mass. My body fat was 20% when I first came to WS; it’s now at 17%. And I’ve gained 10 pounds of muscle over the year. Finally, I was able to increase the variety and amount of weight through my exercise circuit.

Our workouts are never repeated in a sequence. That is to say, I never came to the gym for training and felt like Paul hadn’t thought out a routine for that particular day; the variety of exercises was startling. (The Hedrick Press became my favorite tricep blast!) We did flexor and extensor muscles in supersets; full-body, powerlifting movements like cleans, deadlifts and jerks; and we did isolation movements to target specific body parts. My definition increased as well as my strength.

This was not simply a regiment for getting in shape, but it has also become a lifestyle that I’ve been trained to live. As a college professor, I spend most of my time behind a desk, hunched over papers or peering into a computer screen. There’s nothing in my daily activities that would dictate my staying in shape; that is, nothing other than my new commitment and new knowledge gained through my training with Paul.
